Presented by Image, the biennial Ross and Davis Mitchell Prize for Faith and Poetry awards more than $25,000 to Canadian poets whose work wrestles with the complexity of religious belief. We want to hear from Canadian poets and writers who are grappling with the divine, those for whom poetry is—as Christian Wiman would describe it—a form of theology.
The Mitchell Prize seeks to encourage writers whose poems foster access to spiritual experience—writers whose poems work as lenses through which the world is more closely seen. Poets working in any faith tradition are welcome to enter. Our 2021 judges are Shane McCrae (lead judge and poetry editor for Image), Suzanne Buffam, and Liz Howard.
The recipient of the 2021 Mitchell Prize will receive $20,000 CAD, plus their winning entry will be published in a print edition of Image as well as in the digital 2021 Mitchell Prize Anthology.
The winning poem will be selected from a shortlist of five outstanding poems. The four poets who remain on the shortlist will each receive $1,000 CAD and their poem will be published in the digital 2021 Mitchell Prize Anthology. Additionally, expenses will be covered for all five shortlisted poets to attend the award celebration in Toronto in October 2021 during which the winner will be announced.
In the course of their work, the judges will identify a longlist of noteworthy entries that will be collected in the digital 2021 Mitchell Prize Anthology. The shortlist, and then the winner, will be selected from this longlist. The number of poems on the longlist will depend on the overall number and caliber of poems submitted to the prize.
